In 2008, The Sierra Fund, in partnership with a number of other agencies and organizations, won a $1 million grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to acquire the Rice’s Crossing Property on the Middle Yuba River. This 2,706 acre parcel spans 9.5 miles of the Yuba River, and was a high priority target in the partners’ vision for a 25-mile Yuba River Parkway.
The Sierra Fund was fiscal sponsor for the grant, working with many partners that supported the project including: California Department of Fish and Game, Trust for Public Land, Yuba County Water Agency, California State Parks, University of California, and the California Resources Agency.
In 2014, the Bear Yuba Land Trust completed acquisition of the parcel, with additional funding from the California Resources Agency, and now hold title to the property. Trail development and public access is expected to become available within 2-3 years.
