Yesterday, nearly 50 people attended the third annual fundraiser event for the Deer Creek Tribute Trail (DCTT) featuring a live auction and intimate house concert at a private home in Nevada City. The event raised nearly $5,000 to support expenses related to finishing up the newly completed Nisenan Tribute Site, and potentially and paying for a new trail map that reflects all completed trail sections in one place. The event featured “The Consolations” – a fabulous local men’s quartet with accompanist David Blanchard – who performed cover songs like “The Circle of Life,” “Stand by Me,” and the Beach Boys classic “Barbara Ann.” The Consolations had the audience clapping on their feet, performing Doo-Wop and Barbershop music from the past and the present.

The Deer Creek Tribute Trail’s annual fundraiser will again feature a live auction and intimate house concert at a private home in Nevada City. Last month, The Sierra Fund hosted a powerful and well attended opening ceremony for the Nisenan Tribute Site, the newest addition to Nevada City’s Deer Creek Tribute Trail system. The event, held October 28, 2014 was centered around a ceremony by the Foothills Nisenan Nevada City Rancheria, and also included presentations from project partners, detailing the guiding vision and personal significance of the project to various project participants. With over 125 attendees, we were gratified by the turnout for the event.

The Deer Creek Tribute Trail is a trail network being developed around the Nevada City area. These trails not only pay tribute to history and local landmarks but also increase recreation opportunities and fire safety for our community. One of the most significant recent additions to the trail network is the new trail and 150 ft suspension bridge that crosses Deer Creek on property belonging to Nevada City, connecting two existing trail loops. This bridge and trail honor the Nisenan People, the original people of this area.
